INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OF MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
There are lots of monarch butterflies visiting my garden right now. I grow butterfly weed and eupatorium just for this time of year, when they will be passing through on their journey to Mexico. Most butterflies live a couple of weeks or a couple of months, but the fourth generation of the spring/summer season monarch butterflies live 9 months and their story is incredible! The monarchs are everywhere in town right now. I'm hoping that no one will delay their journey by putting them in a jar or in a cage. They are on a mission of survival. Most of them will be moving on south with the winds of the next cold front.

Deleteafter seeing an article about the small migration etc. from last year and getting pumped up i went look for a caterpillar to raise and to my surprise on a milkweed leaf i found this tiny tiny cat...carefully i carried him and entire plant into the house and put him in my prepared jar like i was handling a newborn i put the plant in water and cleaned his frass and fed him daily about two weeks later he started growing brown fuzzy hair not a monarch lol a month later after a considerable growth spurt and several sheddings he wrapped himself in a leaf and made a cocoon and i am trying my best to keep him comfortable until he emerges his name is wilbur xx
ReplyDeleteI recently saw a weather story where they thought they were seeing some strange storm on their radar. It kept changing. They finally realized it was a migrating swarm of Monarchs. Amazing creatures! Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week!

Deletesome years ago my husband and I took a small van tour into the mountains of Mexico to one of the Monanarch butterfly sanctuaries. Sadly there isn't enough tourism and lots of poverty so logging is taking down the forests. They kept vehicles away- we had to walk up a primitive path a long way to get to the fir trees but then a once in a lifetime experience.
ReplyDeleteI'm so envious!! That must have been amazing. I know about the forests being cut down, but I read that outsiders are trying to help them build up their villages for tourism and things to take to market, so they wouldn't depend so much on the timber from the forest. That's just unbelievable that a world would let the monarch sanctuaries be cut away. Also, by thinning out the trees, it's not keeping them as warm as it used to and thousands of monarchs die in the winter. Oh dear!!
