"TREES" A POEM BY JOYCE KILMER 1886-1918

  TREES

I THINK that I shall never see
a poem lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair
Upon whose bosom snow has lain
Who intimately lives with rain
Poems are made by fools like me
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer
1886-1918

    1. I remember having to memorize it, too. I came across it and was remembering the words as I was reading it. It's such a beautiful poem. I love "A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray." and "A tree that may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair". And, "Only God can make a tree". Oh well, I just love the whole poem :)

  3. Hi Felicia,
Thank you! Yes, it is a redbud tree. This is a picture when it was a young tree. It's about 25 years old now and not so happy with the drought we've been in. But, it still looks so beautiful in the spring.

    1. Hi Nick, When I came across this poem, it brought back memories of when we had to memorize it in school. I think this redbud tree and the way it's shaped fits the poem. It's lifting it's arms to pray.
