MAMA MOCKINGBIRD PROTECTING HER NEST

MAMA MOCKINGBIRD PROTECTING HER NEST

This mama mockingbird is a different one from a few weeks ago.  She's different because she keeps dive bombing Punkin.  She still makes those warning chirps, but it's like she has a death wish.  I've watched her come so close to Punkin and peck her and I'm so afraid Punkin is going to grab her.  Then, what will happen to her babies.
Her nest is in this crepe myrtle tree next door.  It's a perfect place for a nest.  The limbs are very sturdy and cradle the nest.  And, mockingbirds make such good, pretty, sturdy nests.
I know she's just trying to distract Punkin from her babies and I really hope she survives.
I'll be watching and hoping for the best!

  1. Is a crepe myrtle easy for Punkin to climb? I guess the babies would be mom-less, but I don't think the mockingbird cares to be baby-less. When baby birds leave the nests around our house, our dog Dustin has to be leashed to go potty, until the fledglings are up and flying. He jumped and almost caught one with his teeth the other day when he spotted it on the patio and the baby flew a few feet to another spot. Nature and pets always seem to keep us on our toes.

    1. The crepe myrtle trunk is tall, straight and kind of slippery smooth. I guess if a cat is hungry enough, they might climb, but I don't see that happening on this tree. Those babies might be flying any day, now. And yes, it is a bit stressful, hoping they all fly away safely.

  2. I enjoyed your post. I understand your nervousness re the babies getting away safely. Last year finches built their nest on a light fixture by our front door and I worried about them until they made it on their own.

    1. Thank you! I love the little finches and wrens nesting close to our homes.

  3. I think the birds are too smart to nest in our trees with my dog running willy nilly around the yard every day. He did manage to flush a baby rabbit out of a shrub one day and almost caught it. Mother birds also fly at, and peck the squirrels in our yard which is interesting to watch.

    1. Yes, I've seen large blue jays chasing and pecking squirrels. One day, I heard the blue jays squawking and saw a baby blue jay on the ground, so I picked it up to put it in the nearby bush, closer to the parents. I felt a hard hit on my head and the parent blue jay had hit me. BUT, I was just trying to help!!

    1. It was easy to get the photos because that mama kept staying in my yard, warning and distracting my Punkin. Thank you for sharing on your facebook.

  5. I always go through this when birds nest in my yard. I don't understand - with two cats, you'd think they'd go elsewhere. But I've seen lots of babies, so I guess they're doing okay.

    1. Not only cats, but squirrels and then, other birds that steal babies, too.
